Ingredients

Stir Fry Sauce

  • cup Water
  • 1 tablespoon Corn Starch
  • ¼ cup Reduced Sodium Soy Sauce
  • 2 tablespoons Hoisin Sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Brown Sugar
  • 2 Large Garlic Cloves grated or finely minced
  • 1 teaspoon Ginger Powder use fresh if you have it on hand – grated or minced
  • Pinch of Crushed Red Pepper or to taste – leave it out if you don’t like spicy

Beef and Vegetable Stir Fry

  • 1 tablespoon Cooking Oil we use Olive Oil – use your favorite
  • 1 pound Ground Beef good options include ground sirloin, chuck, or ground round
  • ½ teaspoon Salt we use kosher salt
  • 12 ounces Broccoli Slaw we use a prepackaged mix that contains broccoli stalk and carrots
  • 2–3 tablespoons Green Onions sliced – plus extra for garnish, if desired
  • Sesame Seeds for garnish optional

Instructions

Make the Stir Fry Sauce

  • Add the water and cornstarch to a jar or medium bowl.
  • Use a fork or small whisk to stir until the cornstarch dissolves.
  • Add the soy sauce, hoisin sauce, brown sugar, garlic, ginger, and crushed red pepper (if using).
  • Stir vigorously until well combined. Stir the sauce again just before using.

Make the Ground Beef Stir Fry

  • Heat the oil in a large, deep skillet or wok (preferably non-stick) over medium-high heat. When the oil is hot but not smoking, add the ground beef and salt.
  • Stir to combine and arrange the beef in a single layer. Cook for 2 minutes.
  • Stir the ground beef while breaking up any large pieces. Continue cooking and stirring for 2–3 minutes, or until browned.
  • Add the broccoli slaw to the skillet, stir well to combine, and cook for 1–2 minutes, stirring frequently.
  • Lower the heat to medium-low and add the stir fry sauce. Stir well to combine.
  • Cover the skillet and cook for 3-5 minutes to let the flavors come together, stirring occasionally.
  • Add the green onions and stir. Taste and add salt, if necessary. (As a reference, we did not add extra salt to ours.)
  • Serve over rice or noodles, or enjoy on its own.

Notes

  • You can make the stir fry sauce ahead of time (up to a day in advance). Store it in the refrigerator and stir or shake well before using.
  • Use little salt in this recipe as the soy sauce and hoisin sauce both contain a good amount of salt already. You can always add it in at the end if needed.
  • This dish cooks quickly so if you plan on serving it with rice or noodles start them first.
